Salute to Ricky Lee @ Daet World Arts Festival

As homage to the country's multi-awarded scriptwriter, Ricky Lee, a
film festival will be organized in his hometown from Feb 4-10 to
feature some of his prizewinning films.

The event is part of the World Arts Festival organized by the City
of Daet, Camarines Norte under the initiative of Mayor Tito Sarion.

Lee's scripts have resulted into films that have become contemporary
classics of Philippine cinema, and have helped shape the second
golden age of Filipino movies in the 80's.

Five of these will be featured in the festival: Salome, Anak, Muro
Ami, Gumapang Ka sa Lusak, Memories of Old Manila, and Himala.

Lee will also conduct a three-day scriptwriting workshop for
beginning writers. Gina Alajar, who will grace the occasion with the
screening of her film, "Salome,' will also conduct a one-day acting
workshop with Chanda Romero.

The film festival is sponsored by the City Government of Daet,
Presidential Social Fund, Mowelfund Film Institute and the office of
Hon. Senator Juan Ponce Enrile.

Works by 50 contemporary Philippine artists at Kaida Gallery

Kaida Gallery celebrates its first anniversary as an art space this February with 1/50, a group exhibition of works by 50 Philippine contemporary artists.

Established back in February 2007, Kaida Gallery has consistently featured young, dedicated, and emerging painters and sculptors as well as supporting collaborations between them and established names in Philippine art.

This group exhibition aims to gather in a single show representative works from 50 contemporary Philippines artists, some of whom have participated in the solo or group exhibitions held by Kaida Gallery in its first year of operations.

The exhibit 1/50 also Kaida Gallery's contribution to the celebration of February as National Arts Month, as a celebration of diversity and dynamism within Philippine contemporary art.

The anniversary show, 1/50, features paintings and sculptural works by the following artists:

The Celebration
Began in 1991 through Presidential Proclamation No. 683, the National Arts Month activities are spearheaded by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, or NCCA, which is the country's premier government institution for arts and culture.

The People
Every year, the NCCA works hand in hand with arts and culture organizations, local government units, educational institutions, business establishments, and individuals in holding various initiatives in the arts. Now on its sixteenth year, the National Arts Month celebration with the theme "Ani ng Sining" has evolved from a Manila-centered activity, to a truly national event with key activities in all three major island groups - Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao. Involving hundreds of artists from the different disciplines of arts and reaching thousands of people from all walks of life. Art Association of the Philippines Anniversary Exhibit

The Art Association of the Philippines will be celebrating it's
anniversary on February 16, 2008 Saturday at the Kanlungan ng Sining
Gallery, Rizal Park. Artists who are interested to join may submit 1
art-work each. The size may either be 12 x 16 or 18 x 24 inches,
vertical or horizontal format. All art-works must be ready for hanging.
Unframed artworks must be in museum wrap presentation with painted or
clean sidings for proper mounting and must also be ready for hanging.

A piece of paper with the name of the artist,title, medium, size and
price of the art-work must be taped at the back of the painting for
proper labeling and identification of the work.

All paintings must be submitted at the Kanlungan ng Sining on or before
Feb.9, 2008

Tanghalang Ateneo Goes Pop in Shakespeare's Hakbang sa Hakbang

Tanghalang Ateneo and TeatroFilipino Integrated return to Shakespeare with a novel rendition of Measure for Measure, a play on desire, morality, and justice. Translated as Hakbang sa Hakbang, the production marks the first time the play will be staged in Filipino. It will also showcase student talents under the direction of Ronan Capinding, the acclaimed young director of such plays as Middle Finger po and Ang Nilalang ni Victor Frankenstein.

Tanghalang Ateneo's Hakbang sa Hakbang draws on dance movements from contemporary pop culture to capture the spirit of permissiveness that marks the play. This fusion of contemporary dance and Shakespearean text reveals as well the persona of the characters and the tone of each scene. Staged in the round, the play also gives audiences the experience of intimately witnessing the story unfold in their midst. One of Shakespeare's problem plays, Hakbang sa Hakbang seeks a philosophy of morals beyond Puritanism and libertarianism.

In the play, the laidback Duke Vincentio (alternately played by Dan Chua and Exzell Macomb) has appointed the austere Angelo (alternately played by Paolo Apagalang and Gelo Brilliantes) to temporarily take his place as ruler while he is on a diplomatic mission. The new ruler suddenly forces the freewheeling and amoral citizenry into strict adherence to the law. To serve as a warning, Claudio (alternately played by Kenn Cayunda and Brian Sy), a young nobleman, is arrested and sentenced to an immediate death for engaging in premarital sex with his fiance. Isabel (alternately played by Rizzy Alejandro and Reg de Vera), Claudio's sister and a virtuous nun, hesitantly pleads on her brother's behalf, only to be given an immodest proposal by the supposedly virtuous Angelo: her brother's life for her virginity.

Unknown to all, the Duke, disguised as a friar, has secretly been watching the events unfold. He conspires with Isabel and Mariana (alternately played by Nayie Caga-anan and Ysabel Yuzon), Angelo's long lost fiance. They trick Angelo into sleeping with Mariana instead of Isabel, but Angelo still orders Claudio beheaded the next day. The Duke must find another way to save Claudio's life. He secretly weaves the final plot leading to a dramatic revelation scene. With the entire city as the audience, the Duke unmasks himself and decides on the cases of the convicted Claudio and the duplicitous Angelo. Do the Duke's pronouncements make moral sense? Will the justice he bestows give everyone a happy ending?

Tanghalang Ateneo takes Shakespeare to the Disco in Hakbang sa Hakbang

Tanghalang Ateneo returns to Shakespeare with a novel rendition of Measure for Measure, a tragicomedy on desire, morality, and justice. Translated into Filipino as Hakbang sa Hakbang, the production marks the first time the play will be staged in Filipino. It will also showcase student talents who displayed their performance mettle in such previous productions like Middle Finger po and Litisang Bilog ng Caucasus . Ronan Capinding leads the artistic team as director and translator.

Tanghalang Ateneo's Hakbang sa Hakbang brings alive the disco-dancing era. Choreographer Ina Luna, Sound Designer Reamur David and Capinding fuse disco dancing moves and hip hop beats with Shakespearean language. The fusion not only contemporizes Shakespeare; it also creatively reveals the persona of the characters and the tone of each scene. The play is staged in the round thus giving audiences the experience of intimately witnessing the story unfold in their midst. One of Shakespeare's lesser-known works, Hakbang sa Hakbang is a true must-see as it has all the elements of a great untold story, as only Shakespeare can tell.

PETA presents Skin Deep

Robert Seña and Isay Alvarez , both recognized for their stellar
performance in Miss Saigon (original West End cast and Manila) are
Narciso and Isadora Dong-Can, a troubled married couple. May Bayot de
Castro (Tanghalang Pilipino's Himala The Musical) is Amor de Sangre,
the reigning Miss Artificial Beauty. Bituin Escalante, pop R&B singer
par excellance, is Marikit Evangelista, the obese call-center agent
who yearns to loose the unwanted fat in order to look sexier.

Get to meet them, along with more of today's most admired theater
performers in Vincent A. de Jesus' Skin-Deep, a 3rd offering of the
Philippine Educational Theater Association for its 40th Theater Season.
