This year’s UP Film Institute semester break offerings seek to provide a survey of the best of world cinema from various countries in keeping with the United Nations Day celebration that falls in October.
More highlights include the Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film from Germany, Nowhere in Africa (Oct 18 Wed 2 & 7 p.m.; Oct 19 Thu 5 & 7 p.m.), Pedro Almodovar’s Hable con ella (Oct 18 Wed 5 p.m. and Oct 20 Fri 7 p.m.), Im Sang-soo’s A Good Lawyer’s Wife (Oct 19 Thu 7:30 p.m.; Oct 20 Fri 2 p.m.), Gianni Amelio’s Le chiavi di casa (Oct 20 Fri 5 p.m.), Ong-Art Singlumpong’s The Sin (Oct 21 Sat 2 p.m.) and Nonzee Nimibutr’s Jan Dara (Oct 28 Sat 2 p.m.)
Completing the slate is the rare expanded run for what could be the year’s best Filipino film, Kubrador (Oct 23 Mon-Oct 27 Fri 2, 5 & 7 p.m.), directed by Jeffrey Jeturian, produced by MLR Films and starring Gina Pareño.
