Wilfredo Offemaria's Font Exhibit @ Blanc Art Space

"FONT" by
Wilfredo "Offe" Offemaria
Blanc Art Space

Wilfredo "Offe" Offemaria mulls over universality as he incorporates various symbols into his abstract works in "Font," his latest exhibit at Blanc Art Space, 2E Crown Tower, 107 H.V. Dela Costa St., Salcedo Village, Makati.

His preoccupation with writing forms and typeface has him filling canvases with paint-embossed numbers amid broad arcs and random dots, the choice of Arabic numerals an apt metaphor for
understanding that encompasses race, geography, discipline, and technology. In some
pieces his wide, textured strokes result in Chinese prosperity characters that are the artist's take on oriental brush painting while he refers to the far-reaching influences of the Sino culture, familiar worldwide.

With reverence, Offemaria also renders the native Filipino script Baybayin, more popularly known as Alibata, in part cultural tribute and in part lament about its waning recognition.

"Font" runs from October 29 to November 17, 2007.

For more details on Wilfredo Offemaria's Font Exhibit @ Blanc Art Space, please visit www.blanc.ph email info@blanc.ph or call/sms 752-0032/0920- 9276436

Publicity and promotions for Signature is provided in part by The Lemon Circle Event Management and Consultancy (thelemoncircle@yahoo.com) .

In celebration of performance venue Dance Forum’s instrumental role in defining independent dance practice in the Philippines, “Signature” will be staged there on Nov. 17 and 18.

To be showcased are contemporary dance artists Myra Beltran and Paul Morales in signature pieces as well as the works of the winners of the recently concluded Wi_fi Body Festival's New Choreographers Competition, the first choreography competition for the solo-duet form in the Philippines.

An alternative, intimate and open-air performance venue, Dance Forum was founded by Beltran in 1995. She is a leading figure in Philippine independent dance, conceptualizing and leading the World Dance Alliance-Philippine s Choreographers' Network in the groundbreaking Contemporary Dance Map Series and the Wi_fi Body Festival at the Cultural Center of the Philippines that has supported choreographers and dancers in the independent contemporary dance scene in the Philippines.

“Ten years ago, Dance Forum opened publicly,” said Beltran. “At that time, independent dance practice in the Philippines necessarily had to be contemporary in approach and aesthetic. The direction has subsequently developed in many branching streams, but the idea of the solo dance, and all its political implications in the history of dance, is an important step in any ground-breaking dance movement. We want to celebrate and commemorate that idea all over again.”

Working through the birthing pains of establishing the idea of “solo artist” or “solo dance,” Beltran has successfully laid the foundations for the understanding and appreciation for this performing art form. “Now I can proudly say that the idea stands on solid ground and that, as a matter of fact, it is a privilege to do solo dance work,” she said. “This ‘rebellion,’ this ‘signature’ is what we want to celebrate – a celebration of the spirit that opened up Dance Forum to house independent contemporary dance, with a new generation of artists carrying on the practice.”

Rodel Tapaya's Perya Exhibit @ Boston Gallery

RODEL TAPAYA
"PERYA"
Boston Gallery
Exhibit opening and reception with the artist
20 October 2007
6:00 pm

The exhibit was inspired by a local carnival called perya, a place of chance, amusements and horror. Perya’s locality, things and people are very powerful subjects in painting, Most of the series are very lively in terms of color but ironically these paintings are no happy pictures. Today we seldom see perya. But I think its presence can be felt. Game shows that give prize money in exchange of self-humiliation, people with disabilities are still deprived of job opportunities and rights, gambling seen as a way to have a better life. The exhibit invites its viewers to experience perya once again. Not just a place to take pleasure in games of chance, fun rides and see terrifying images but also witness a social reality.

Twenty-seven year old Rodel Tapaya studied Painting at University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts. He won the grand prize in the 2001 Nokia Arts Awards Asia-Pacific held in Seoul, Korea and was sent for intensive art studies on drawing and painting at the Parsons School of Design in New York and at the University and of Art and Design in Helsinki, Finland. He was short-listed for two consecutive years (2005 and 2006) by Ateneo Art Awards.

Rodel Tapaya's Perya Exhibit @ Boston Gallery runs from October 20, 2007 to November 7, 2007.

The Samsons Exhibit @ Kaida Gallery

“The Samsons”
Jerson Samson • Julio Samson • Jaypee Samson
KAIDA GALLERY
28 October – 12 November 2007

You don't have to be Bart to love the Samsons.

Painters and brothers Jerson, Julio, and Jaypee Samson mount a three-man show this month at Kaida Gallery. But unlike the dysfunctional and comical family glorified in American primetime animation, the Samsons are anything but goofy and trivial in their representations of contemporary Philippine society.

Jerson Samson himself as a 'taga-masid' (observer) or 'taga-kwento' (story-teller) of everyday realities, from the mundane to the bizarre. At a time when stories tend to revolve around the centers of power, Jerson Samson chooses to represent stories from the margins of society. These, such as urban poor slums, are spaces often hidden away from the view of tourists or dignitaries, sites occupied by most of the nation's rural poor population.

Julio Samson delivers a more scathing critique of societal ills and excesses in a series of paintings depicting contemporary personalities as half-human and half-animal. The artist appropriates traditional and historical animal symbolisms--often predator species which denote a variety of vices or unsavory qualities--and juxtaposes these with human figures whose attires similarly denote the dominance in the political, economic, military, and religious hierarchies of our contemporary times.

Jaypee Samson exhibits in this show a series of works articulating the woes of the present Philippine public education system. He pays tribute to a familiar though often overlooked figure: the public school teacher, steward of the nation's future. Aware of the increasing dearth of educators, either forced to leave their vocations or find jobs overseas due to economic exigencies, Samson quietly pays tribute to what he terms as the 'new heroes' of this generation: teachers who strive to educate their students at all costs and through whatever means, in spite of the crisis facing

The three Samson brothers all completed their degrees in Fine Arts (major in Painting) at the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Fine Arts in Diliman, Quezon City and have earned individual distinctions in various Philippine art competitions.

A consistent Finalist in the 27th, 28th, and 29th Shell National Students Art Competition, Jerson Samson went on to win the Juror's Choice distinction in the 1997 Representational Category of the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) Annual Art Competition. He was a Finalist in the 2003 Philip Morris Philippine Art Awards, and the 2000 and 2001 Metrobank Foundation Young Painters Annual. He was also included in the Top Five of the 1999 Philip Morris Philippine Art Awards.

Julio Samson is currently taking up his Masters in Fine Arts, also at UP and has completed units in educational teaching at the Marikina Institute of Science and Technology. He is a Semi- Finalist in the 2006 Philippine Art Awards sponsored by the Philip Morris Group of Company, the Metrobank Art and Design Competition (Sculpture Division), the 2003 Art Association of the Philippines and The Philippine Olympic Committee "Sports on Canvas and Paper Painting Competition", the 2000 Metrobank Young Painter’s Annual Painting Tilt, and the 1997 Pilipinas Shell National Student’s Art Competition.

The youngest of the three, Jaypee Samson is a triple Grand Prize awardee in the 2005 Government Service and Insurance System (GSIS) Painting Competition (Student Category), the 2004 Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (Oil-Based Medium on Canvas Category), and the 2004 18th Visual Art National Competition for the PLDT-DPC Telephone Directory Cover. He has held two solo exhibitions since 2006.

The Samsons opens on 28 October, 6 p.m. (Sunday) and runs until the 12th of November 2007 at Kaida Gallery, located at the 2nd Floor, GFO Building, 122 Kamuning Road, Quezon City, Philippines 1102. For inquiries, please call (632) 4144777. 0928.5057285. www.kaidagallery.com

Auditions for Mindanao Musical

AUDITIONS
Ranaw: Isang Alamat
1985 CCP Playwriting Award

When Ranaw: Isang Alamat first toured the country in 1987 and 1988, the national prominence of the then 10-year old Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG) as a major performing arts company was cemented. IPAG, celebrating its Pearl Anniversary this year, reinvents this dance-musical that has received wide acclaim in its extensive road tours.

The remount needs:

Males Leads
Can look between 21-24 years old. Medium built and height, muscular. Can sing and move/dance

Female Leads
Can look 16 - 18 years old, can sing and dance, slim and light

Supporting Males
Can look 40-60. Can act; singing and dancing not required

Supporting Females
Can look 40-60. Can act; singing and dancing not required

Chorus (Male and Female)
Can dance. Knowledge of martial movements (kuntao and/or kungfu and related forms) for males will be a plus. Ability to sing will also be a plus.

For singing and dancing parts:

1. sing one music number a capella, preferably any solo number from a zarzuela or a Broadway musical
2. act out a short one-minute monologue in Filipino or Cebuano
3. mimic steps from a one of our choreographer's pool captains

For non-singing and dancing parts:

1. perform a short one-minute dance vignette with or without music accompaniment (applicant provides own CD)
2. mimic dance movements led by one of our choreographer's pool captains

Expert dancing (contemporary or ethnic-adapted) will be a plus, however most lead roles will require the levels of broad gesticulations and highly energized movements (for males) and nuanced flowing gestures (for females). Because the musical will require double- and triple-roles, the ability to sing and dance will be an advantage.

No single cattle call. The Artistic Staff will be available daily starting October 8 (Mon) until October 27 (Sat) to entertain auditions at the MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology Production Room of the IPAG. Callbacks start Nov. 3 (Sat). Rehearsals begin in November. Performance dates: February 7, 8, and 9 in Iligan City . Road tours follow the Iligan premiere.

Cancer Institute Foundation Auction @ Silverlens Gallery

Cancer Institute Foundation Auction
at Silverlens Gallery

As part of the Cancer Institute Foundation’s (CIF) campaign on cervical cancer prevention, a photo auction will be held on Saturday, 6 October, 6pm at Silverlens Gallery in Pasong Tamo Ext., Makati. To be auctioned off are photographs by Jo Avila, Bahaghari, Miguel Fabie III, Ronnie Lazaro, Jun de Leon, Isa Lorenzo, At Maculangan, Billy Mondoñedo, Emmanuel Santos, Ivan Sarenas, John Silva, Pilar Tuason, Wig Tysmans, Lilen Uy, Jake Verzosa, and Denise Weldon, and an etching by National Artist Benedicto Cabrera. Proceeds from the sales of the prints shall help support the Cervical Cancer Prevention (CECAP) Program. The Program aims to empower Filipino women with information and knowledge in preventing cervical cancer, and to influence them to take part in the first cervical cancer support group in the country.

In the Philippines, as in many parts of the world, cervical cancer is second only to breast cancer as the most common potentially deadly disease that afflicts and kills women. In the Philippines, estimates in the year 2000 placed the number of cervical cancer cases at between 35 thousand and 70 thousand, and there are 7 thousand new cases that are added to it every year. This is mainly due to late detection, the lack of awareness about the disease among Filipino women, and the stigma associated with cervical cancer.

The good news is that cervical cancer is highly preventable through healthy lifestyle and regular pap screening. It can also be prevented by a breakthrough vaccine that could be given to young girls as early as 9. Cervical cancer is the only cancer with a vaccine.
