The Jorge B. Vargas Museum
February 20, 2007 to May 6, 2007
A retrospective exhibition on Florencio B. Concepcion. The exhibit highlights Concepcion's artistic development from his schooling days at the UP School of Fine Arts , his scholarship in Italy for graduate studies in the Fine Art Academy in Rome.
Florencio B. Concepcion was one of the proponents of abstract painting in the Philippines. He is also recognized for his contribution as an art educator, having served as Director and, later Dean, of the University of the East College of Fine Arts. While known for his abstract works, Concepcion believed in the value of learning the basic skills and techniques in drawing and painting. The exhibition showcases his works in various media - drawings, paintings, prints, and sculptures.
Works of Florencio B. Concepcion's contemporaries represented in the Vargas Museum collection were selected to compliment the exhibition. As a collateral activity, contemporary artists who were students of Florencio B. Concepcion will be invited in a forum to discuss his influence in their respective developments as artists. Moreover, an educational program focusing on colors will be launched to encourage children to explore their creativity. This exhibit is co-curated by Victoria Herrera of the Department of Art Studies, College of Arts and Letters, UP Diliman and Albert Avellana of the Avellana Art Gallery.
This project is part of the Vargas Museum's 20th anniversary celebration with the theme Color in Philippine Art. It is also one of the events leading to the centennial commemoration of the University of the Philippines.
