Trumpet Playshoppers High School Musical Auditions

Auditions for "High School Musical," open to Trumpets Playshoppers

The Philippines' leading multimedia workshop provider Trumpets Playshop and
STAGES are calling all Playshoppers to audition for the most anticipated local staging of the hit Disney musical, "High School Musical," on April 11 (Wed.) and 12 (Thurs.), 6 to 10 p.m., at the Podium Mall, Ortigas Center.

The Trumpet Playshoppers High School Musical Audition is open to all past and current Trumpets Playshop students, 14 to 20 years old. Hopefuls must prepare a song (minus one or piano accompaniment) and a dance number. Please bring colored photos.

Trumpets Playshop and STAGES' production of "High School Musical," which
will be mounted at the Meralco Theater starting this June, will cast young
heartthrob Sam Concepcion as the musical's male lead, Troy Bolton. This will be Sam's big stage comeback after the hit "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," which was staged four years ago.

PHILSTAGE Marks 10th Year, Elects New Officers

Tanghalang Pilipino Artistic Director Dennis Marasigan leads the new
set of officers as President of the Philippine Legitimate Stage
Artists Group, Inc. (PHILSTAGE) following its recent election for
Board of Directors for 2007-2010. Other elected officers include
PETA's Melvin Lee, Vice President; Ballet Philippines' Sandy
Hontiveros, Secretary; and TRUMPETS' Alvin Dela Peòa, Treasurer.

The rest of the new Board Members include Actors' Actors' Leonardo
Lim, Ballet Manila's Susan Macuja, gantimpala Theater Foundation's
Dolly Bunoan, Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit's Mitch Valdes,
and Repertory Philippines' Gigette Tolentino. PHiLSTAGE Executive
Director Elmar Beltran Ingles is ex-officio Board Member.

Since its establishment in 1997, PHILSTAGE has launched a series of
performing arts festivals in Shangrila Plaza Mall, Subic Bay Arts
Center, and various venues in Metro Manila and suburban areas. In
2003, it became the country's only alliance of professional
performing arts companies registered with the Philippine Council for
NGO Certification. Together with the National Commission for Culture
and the Arts, PHILSTAGE has launched the Theater Appreciation
Program offering opportunities for free viewing of plays, musical
and dance performances to public school students and teachers.
Previous programs also included touring the regions with its
Performing Arts Programming and Management workshop series in
cooperation with the NCCA's Institute for Cultural and Arts
Management.

PHILSTAGE plans to launch a website and quarterly publication on
cultural issues and events, a theater awards program, fellowship
activities and collaborative productions, cultural education
advocacy programs, and a pioneering compact disk recording of well-

PULANG SINE @ Cinekatipunan

On March 29, 2007, the activist multi-media collective
Southern Tagalog Exposure will be facilitating the
"Pulang Sine" Program of Mag:net Café's Cinekatipunan.

Pulang Sine
will feature two documentaries produced by ABC 5's
news and public affairs program, Frontlines.

"State of War," which aired in July 24, 2006 in time
for Gloria Arroyo's State of the Nation Address, shows the
kind of counter-insurgency operations the Armed Forces
of the Philippines is implementing other the
administration' s "all-out-war" policy.

The other documentary which was aired in August 23,
2006, focuses on the operations of the "shadow" government
run by the National Democratic Front in Bicol. It also
featured "underground" filmmakers under the NDF-Bicol
tri-media group ISNAYP.

As part of the program, there will be an open
discussion on "changing the face of revolutionary
films" or how underground/ subversive
cinema has evolved since the time of the Marcos
dictatorship. Guest speakers include Roland Tolentino,
Nick DeOcampo and Bonifacio Ilagan.

PULANG SINE @ Cinekatipunan
The program will start at 5:30 pm. The
screening is FREE, though viewers are encouraged to
make voluntary contributions for the honoraria of the

Summer Art Workshops

BALLET MANILA will have its 11th summer workshop, Just Dance 10!, from April 10 to May 27. Ballet enthusiasts 18 years old and below can join and learn techniques from Lisa Macuja-Elizalde, BM's artistic director and principal ballerina, and Osias Barroso, artistic associate and ballet master. The classes are divided into four levels, from beginners to advance. It also includes pointe class, variations, pas de deux, partnering, boys' classes and adult ballet. There is also a baby ballet class for children as young as three years old. Enrollment begins on March 17 and will end on April 14. The classes will culminate in a two-day recital, which will be held on May 26 and 27 at the Star Theatre. Auditions for scholars and apprentices will be held from 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 17. GANTIMPALA opens its doors to potential stage actors and actresses as the company announces the opening of its musical theater workshop for young men and women ages 13 and above. Classes are every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday starting April 11 until May 19, at the Rehearsal Hall of the Concert at the Park Open Air Auditorium, in the heart of historic Luneta, Manila. It offers lectures and actual exercises on the following: acting, singing and dancing, this is in preparation for a musical theater performance. A musical revue will be mounted by the participants as a culminating activity. Roeder Camañag will be its facilitator with tenor Nazer Salcedo as voice teacher. Gantimpala Theater artistic director is Tony S. Espejo. The workshop is in cooperation with the National Parks and Development Committee (NPDC). PETA invites everyone to join its theater arts workshop. The following courses are offered: Children's Theater 1 (6-8 years old), Children's Theater 2 (9-12 years old), Teen Theater 1 (ages 13 to 17); Courses for ages 17 years old and above are: Theater Arts 1, Theater Arts Production, Creative Musical Theater and Basic Acting. The Children's Theater Production allows the kids to experience creating stories, imagining scenes and interpreting characters from folk tales, fairy tales and their own stories. An advanced course is available for those who have undergone the children's theater courses or its equivalent. Teen Theater explores the different styles of experimental and alternative media, as well as the traditional forms of art. Those who have previously taken this program may advance to Teen Theater Production where the participants work on different genres. Asian and Western theater traditions including the Philippines will be discussed. Educators and drama club moderators are offered three different courses: Children's Theater Production and the Theater-in-Educatio n series which has two modules, Creative Pedagogy and Asian Theater. The Kunst Gallery, Batangueño Organization in Germany, the AAP and the Ambassadors in Europe join hands together to come up a series of exhibitions in line with the Philippine Independence Celebration in EUROPE.

The Ambassadors and Mr. Virgilio Cuison selected all the artists to be included in the Global Exhibit in London, Rome, Vienna , Berlin , Holand , Amsterdam and Brazil . This will be a month long tour exhibition.

This will be the start of a partnership between AAP and Kunst Gallery to promote Philippine art globally.

FFG's Anniversary Celebration Part 2 @ Penguin Gallery

In celebration of Women's Month, two great groups will join forces to bring forth the artistic ladies of the local poetry and music scene this wed, March 28, at Penguin Gallery in Malate.

Kooky Tuason of the much-talked about Romancing Venus albums will share the spotlight with Feminine Force Group (FFG) as she brings her roster of talented personalities in the forefront to do spoken word with electro music in the background.

It's FFG's first time to do a collaborative work with Kooky, an advocate of women's rights, and first time that it will set aside the usual full band set up. The show is the end half of FFG's two-part anniversary celebration this month.

Kooky, a modern poet herself, will lead the show with friends in the biz Ginny Mata, Charms Tianzon of Matilda, Anabel Bosch, Diwata, IO, and some surprise guests from her Romancing Venus circle.

Mervin Espina opens the week with the South East Asian
program, featuring six short works by Malaysian
independent filmmaker and writer Amir Muhammed. Sine
Patriyotiko presents their winning entry to last
year’s Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula
[Documentary Video] awards, Mula Third Avenue Hanggang
Dulo.

Wednesday’s treat is a back-to-back screening of short
works by young acclaimed filmmakers Raya Martin and
John Torres, followed by a screening of compelling
television documentaries on the insurgency and counter
insurgency war to be presented by Southern Tagalog
Exposure on Thursday. Friday the 30th is Elvert de la
Cruz Banares’ day, with eXtermination2, a marathon of
his short works.

Mag:net caps the month of March on Saturday with an
arsenal of short experimental works by campus-based
filmmakers from KALAYAAN College and the College of
St. Benilde (curated by Jay Ticar and Elvert Banares).

Held Mondays to Saturdays at Mag:net Café Katipunan,
Cinekatipunan screenings start at 5:30 PM.
While the film screenings are free, viewers are
encouraged to make voluntary contributions for the

this young film maker has thought up an adequate

TAWIDGUTOM is an experimental love poem/monologue
composed of images that recur and repeat themselves.
The narrator reminisces on a relationship and
anticipates meeting his love again, both with
trepidation and excitement. SALAT is composed of
several vignettes that are like snap-shots of urban
life, juxtaposed once again with images of love,
friendship and everyday life. In THE LAST SHERBET,
street kids savour ice cream. LUNAR PLAY is a short
elegy for Portuguese footballer Miklos Feher
(1979-2004), while ELLIPSIS, KULOB, AND LUNAR PUNCH is
a triptych in which the narrator muses on hope and the
persistence of the spirit to want to carry on, against
the background of a relationship that has quietly
ended. KUNAP PAAANO KITA LILIGAWAN NANG DI KUMAKAPIT
SA IYO? is an experimental film composed of rapid
cuts, digitised images,snippets of urban and rural
landscapes that are placed against a running poem,
often premised by the film's title – how can I court
you without ever holding you? -- but this rhetorical
question is addressed as much to a lover unseen as it
is to inanimate objects and to the world around the
poet/narrator.

• Ang Bayan Kong Payapa (4 min)
This is the state of the nation cycle. (Originally, a
2-channel video installation for an exhibit, the work
was re-edited for usual screening pleasures.)
• astrangiam
(7min) Mind over matter. Perception over fact. Life
over death. Shot in Casio Exilim EX-53 still camera,
'astrangiam' meditates on the relationships and
parallelisms of time, spontaneity, assumptions, dreams
and elements of nature.
• Gemini (8 min)
A diptych film – visual experimentation of 16mm found
footages, scratching, etching and punching holes on
the actual film – with each color of the film strips
soaked in different concoctions and buried in sand.
• Plema [Phlegm] (22 min)
Motivated by emotional turmoils and day-job related
exhaustion, the filmmaker creates this video letter to
his VIDPREP (Video Experimentation) class with hopes
to help exorcise personal demons. Recording on used
tapes and utilizing current illness, this
semi-autobiographic al video metaphorically structures
a visual collage of the filmmaker's wants, desires and
lamentations, strongly hinting of his retreat (or is
it escape?) from urban chaos and his complete
submission to creative freedom.

Poetry on video tackling themes of innocence, vices

Elvert de la Cruz Bañares is a filmmaker, curator,
educator and multi-media artist. His films have been
screened in underground film festivals in the United
States, Australia, Canada, Singapore and Japan. He
curated first time Filipino programs for the
'Queerfest: Vancouver Gay & Lesbian Film Festival' and
the 'Antimatter Underground Film & Video Festival' in
Victoria, Canada. He has, by far, written, produced
and directed 43 shorts (he calls them his "little
low-budget films"). "Gemini" is the only Filipino Film
in Official Selection at the Antimatter Underground
Film Festival 2004 in Canada and was presented as an
installation at the Daejon Museum of Art in South
Korea in 2005. Twice he was sent as Philippine
Delegate to Filipino film festivals in China
(Beijing'05 and Shanghai'06) . He is currently
finishing his two full-length films, 'Alipo-op Sa
Animo' (Fog In The Consciousness) and 'The Atomika
Settlement: Devastation Canvas # 5'. He is the
festival director of eKsperim[E]nto Festival of Film,
Video & New Media and the 2006 ASEAN Film Festival (at
The Podium).

Students from the Fine Arts Department of KALAYAAN
College present expressions on video. Shorn of
narrative, the works are visual plays and experiments
on form. CELINE ROQUE compares and contrasts visuals
on sex and religion on digital (experimental, 2007).
JAN LUDWIG GO presents INOM, a short experimental work
about the life of a student of the artist/filmmaker,
beginning when the subject decides to consume seven
bottles of beer ( 8 mins, digital, 2006). GABRIEL
ALDECOA, PAOLO MARTINEZ, and AYA CADIZ will also
present more experimental works.

About KALAYAAN College’s Bachelor of Fine Arts
program: The Department is guided by the philosophy
that every person can be nurtured to become an artist.
Although some may have special abilities concerning
art at a very early age, this does not mean that the
practice of art is limited to a few gifted
individuals. Through personal discipline, industry and
excellent training, the beginning student of fine arts
can be developed to become professional artists who
are at the same time responsive to the needs of their
communities.

Despite the modern and usually controversial approach of some of its
film and theater counterparts, Martir Sa Golgota, Tanghalang Sta.Ana's
depiction of the passion and crucifixion of Jesus Christ, sticks to
tradition's something that they've been doing for the past 18 years.
Tanghalang Sta. Ana's version adheres to the Pinoy format of the
senakulo, with subliminal implications on the coming May elections.

"I believe that we have to insert some commentary, otherwise, Christ's
death would have been in vain. So yearly, we have different themes. We
have integrated topics on family, drugs, abortion, peace and order"
explains the director, former Councilor Lou Veloso. But we're still
trying to be as close to the traditional portrayal of the
Passion as possible."

For Veloso, the birth of "Martir Sa Golgota" and of the Tanghalang
Sta. Ana came as a form of a personal Cavalry 18 years ago. These two
was a product of a persistant dream to put up a community theater in
his area.

For him, this project was a great means to introduce culture and the
arts even to the people from Classes D and E, who, at normal
circumstances, wouldn't have the means to watch a full- length play.
"We've had more than a hundred members from all walks of life. We had
drivers, teachers, mothers, out- of- school youth as members," recalls
Veloso.

After the Tanghalang Sta. Ana's success in their initial production of
"Martir sa Golgota" the theater group went on to create various
productions, some of which were related to the Filipino Catholic
rituals, such as the "Panunuluyan" The nine- day presentation mostly
involved the poor residents of Sta. Ana as actors.

Tanghalang Sta. Ana likewise toured the community to stage productions
tackling drugs, family life and the environment.

Veloso's dream of nurturing community theater in Sta. Ana leaped
forward when he was first elected as a councilor in 1995. After a few
years, Veloso was able to acquire a small portion in Plaza Hugo Sta.
ana which became the Sta. Ana Arts Center.

"It was a nearly dilapidated bodega which we all cleaned with our own
bare hands. We all helped one another. My dream to have a legitimate
venue was finally realized," relates Veloso.

With the success of his community theater and after nine years of
being a councilor, Veloso was able to convince the council to
integrate art and culture in the academic curriculum. He believes that
art develops one's skills.

Veloso also observes that the community theater serves as a good
instrument where the youth can have something productive to keep them
busy, thereby keeping them away from drugs and illegal activities not
uncommon from depressed areas.

"I guess this success is one of the reasons why we're staging Martir
sa Golgota," says Veloso. "For us working in this play, this serves as
our annual religious offering."

Movie actors Ariel Rivera, Christopher de Leon, Rez Cortez, Daniel
Fernando, Rita Avila, Pinky Marquez,Tommy Abuel, Bodjie Pascua, Alma
Conception, Ricky Davao, Carmi Martin, Ronnie Lazaro, Perry Escaño and
Yul Servo have at one time or another played major roles in the Lenten
offering. Its first Jesus was former action actor Raymond Keanu.

Tanghalang Sta. Ana resident actor Russel Sorillo who played as Jesus
Christ the Nazareth for five consecutive years helping out celebrities
include theater,television, film actor Richard Quan (Angel and Juan
dela Cruz),Ernie Garcia (John the Baptist), Jenine Desiderio
(Magdalene) , Kimberly Diaz (Mary) Perry Escaño (Pontius Pilate) and
Ces Aldava (Caiphas). Completing the cast are supporting actors from
Gantimpala Actors Company Abel Napuran,Lowell Conales, Ronnie
Martinez,Paul Sy,Niesty Abad,Molts Menesses, Choy
Roldan,Emlyn Santos, and the Tanghalang Sta.Ana Actors company.

"The thought that they're presenting it in several communities for
free, was enough motivation for the Opus Dei believer to look at the
Lenten ritual in a whole new perspective. I'm thankful helping out
with me for this year direction's are my close friends Abel Napuran
and Ces Aldava from Bulwagang Gantimpala and Joseph Otep of Tanghalang
Sta. Ana member," said Veloso.

"Actually, some of the participants in this play are doing it as an
offering. Seeing how passionate they are about the production, in a
way, gives you drive to perfect your work, "Veloso added.

will be shown on, Holy Wednesday April 4,2007, at
Plaza Hugo, Sta. Ana (near the church);, April 5,2007 Maundy Thursday,
at the Mabolo Basketball Court, Obesis St., Pandacan; and on April
6,2007 Good Friday, at J. Posadas, Punta, Sta. Ana at 7:30 p.m.

The National Museum and Museum Foundation of the Philippines invites you to attend a very special lecture by anthropologist and former First Lady of Peru, Madam Eliane C. Karp de Toledo at the Ablaza Hall of the National Museum on March 27, 2:00 - 5:00 pm.

Mrs. Toledo is presently teaching as a visiting lecturer at Stanford University in California . As an anthropologist, she teaches courses related to indigenous peoples and their social inclusion to democracy in Latin American countries. As a diplomat, she practices what she preaches, presiding over various philanthropic entities, one of which is the Administrative Council of the Pacha Foundation for Change. This Foundation places special emphasis on the design of sustainable development projects based on traditional and communal organizations and the development of productive skills to promote the comparative economic advantages of the Peruvian biodiversity and its rich potential for ecotourism.

In relation to her areas of expertise, Mrs. Toldeo will discuss biodiversity, cultural heritage and the creation of alternatives sources of income such as eco-tourism managed by the indigenous communities.

Aside from educating its youth market,
exposing them to various theater
forms, historical novels and literary
works of National Artists that are
made into stage plays, Gantimpala
Theater prides as a company that
discovers and nurtures promising
talents through its summer workshop
program.

Continuing with this tradition of
discoveries are Joel Molina and Perry
Escaño. These gentlemen might be
considered as relative unknowns to
most lifestyle and entertainment
editors, and the public may not even
care who they are what they do but for
Gantimpala Theater, the duo inches
their way, slowly but surely to
mainstream entertainment.

Joel Molina (2004 workshop graduate)
regular appears on television thanks
to the many commercials wherein he
plays lead. Presently, he is the
field reporter for a food-seasoning
product with the catchy line, "ikaw,
naka-meaty ka na rin ba?" Other
prominent roles are the suitor seen
running away from the father of his
beloved that he did for a very popular
flip-flop and he essayed the part of
an urban professional on the verge of
sneezing for a vitamin C brand.

Fans and supporters of the latest Sam
Milby, Zanjoe Marudo and Toni Gonzaga
starrer, You Got Me, also saw him as
part of Gonzaga's SWAT Team.

Perry Escaño (graduate of workshop
class 2003), meanwhile, is busy
filming independent full length and
short films. His biggest role to date
is that of Big Boy Gallardo in the
Will Fredo phenomenal maiden offering
Compound. As Big Boy, Escaño provided
the requisite heat in the movie as the
husband of Romina (Liza Diño) and the
boy toy of Jay (Jake Macapagal).
Compound will have a summer tour in IloIlo
Robinson's Apr 11-17,Boracay Apr 20-22
& Puerto Galera May 5-7,2007

On primetime TV, he was the hired
tormentor of Mark Herras in I Love NY
and now, he plays as one of the
corrupt cops headed by Antonio
Aquitania in Super Twins and as Fred comic

Dancing Wounded – Contemporary Dance Commune unlocks again this summer The 2nd Tao Of The Contemporary Dancer - a launchpad for solo/duo dance. This program brings together in one platform four dance/body disciplines: classical ballet and yoga combined with 2 other paths in dancing – release technique and partnering, all converging into a composition class.

Open not only to dancers but also to individuals with a strong affinity to movement and dance and also, for those with a significant background in the performing arts.

The faculty is to be lead by Jose Jay B. Cruz, Artistic Director of Dancing Wounded – Contemporary Dance Commune, pioneering independent and contemporary dancer. Has been performing internationally, awarded a dance residency grant in Dance OMI, New York and with his latest work "Gestures of the Flesh" selected as finalist to the 2007 Yokohama Dance Collection.

Dancing Wounded – Contemporary Dance Commune directs its effort in pursuing a more active and diverse contemporary dance scene in Manila with works centered on expanding the possibilities of dance by collaborating with musicians, singers, actors, poets, instrumentalists and visual artists. If you are a Filipino/Filipina Photographer based abroad (Pro, amateur, or enthusiasts) , you
are invited to a group art photo exhibit to happen in November at OWG. Pls send to
rosscapili@yahoo. com (with a subject line "I'm a Filipino" ) 4 (four) best images that will
represent your style and choice of subjects. Pixel size must be at least 500kb. Send also a
brief info about yourself and your art statement/s (if you have something to say why you
produced those images).

For submission will be images done in the past and is not limited
to digital, but also includes film or any type of camera used (including point and shoot,
lomo, pinhole, medium format etc )

Deadline for submission of all requirements above will be April 15, 2007. The mission of
the show is to showcase the Filipino/Filipina photographers abroad who are doing images

Lav Diaz: Ebolusyon ng Isang Pamilyang Pilipino
(Evolution of a Filipino Family) at Cinekatipunan

Cinekatipunan is proud to present Lav Diaz's opus,
Ebolusyon ng Isang Pamilyang Pilipino. The first of
its kind in Philippine cinema history, EBolusyon takes
us on a Pamilyang Pilipino" spans the years 1971 to
1987, a period of turbulence, brutality, complexity.

The years 1971 and 1972 were the height of radicalism
by the Philippine Left, the onset of the
Muslim-Christian strife in the island of Mindanao and
the eventual declaration of Martial Law by dictator
Ferdinand Marcos. From 1964 up to 1985, the Marcos
regime trampled on human rights, institutionalized
graft and corruption in the bureaucracy, and looted
the national coffers. In 1986, a peaceful uprising
called The People's Power Revolution forced Marcos out
of the country ending his dictatorial rule and
installing Corazon Aquino, widow of the murdered Ninoy
Aquino- Marcos' top political foe, as President.

Against this backdrop is the farming family Gallardo,
whose struggle and condition mirrors the marginalized
population of the Philippines; the sector trapped in a
situation not of their own doing, but born from a
system that could not provide proper social services,
and of a feudal culture that only protected and
empowered the status quo. Central to the story are the
disintegration, displacement and dysfunction caused by
poverty, not just to the family unit but, also, to the
individual members. These and other characters form
the cycle of lives that intertwine and interact as the
nation struggles to survive economically, politically,
sociologically and spiritually.

For those who are familiar with Diaz's works,
"Ebolusyon ng Isang Pamilyang Pilipino" is "Batang
West Side I". "Batang West Side" tackled the very same
premise, subject and theme but explored it in a very
different time and milieu-the need to critique the
Filipino, examine his condition, confront his past.
"Batang West Side" dealt with our scars, "Ebolusyon…"
explores the infliction of the wound.

"Ebolusyon…" is eleven years in the making.
Pre-production started in December of 1993 in Jersey
City, and began photography on March 8, 1994 in
Lexington, New Jersey. Production was protracted and
independent; shot only when there was money, and if
the crew and actors were available. The Philippine
shoot started in early 1997 in Gerona, Tarlac, and
culminated early April of 2003 in the majestic
mountains of Itogon, Benguet. More scenes were added
last October and November of 2004.

Post production started February of 2004 and finally
stopped January 31, 2005. Different versions of the
film was already shown in various festivals-The Asian
American International Film Festival of New York 2004
(8 hours rough cut on vhs), The Toronto International
Film Festival 2004 (10 hours on digital beta), The
Rotterdam International Film Festival 2005 and
Goteberg Film Festival 2005 (10 hours 43 minutes.

Ebolusyon garnered the Gawad Urian awards for Best
Picture, Best Screenplay, and Best Production Design
and the Best Picture plum at the .MOV digital
Festival.

In deference to the length of the work Ebolusyon will
be screened at Mag:net starting 8 AM and is expected
to end at around 7 PM. All are enjoined and challenged
to watch the film right from the very start. Viewers
are encouraged to bring along pillows. Breakfast,
lunch and dinner is available at Mag:net Cafe.

'Ebolusyon' may trigger a revolution

IN "EBOLUSYON ng Isang Pamilyang Pilipino," Raynaldo
(Elryan De Vera) is rescued as an infant from
abandonment by a mentally unhinged woman, Hilda
(Marife Necisito). She takes him back to her family in

the countryside, where he grows up to witness and
suffer the lot of Filipino farmers: enslavement to the
land, getting caught in the crossfire of political
conflicts and severe displacement. He flees and joins
a mining family in the high lands. In his new world,
he discovers that same plaintive reality of loss,
suffering and dislodgement.

Thus, the thread that connects "Ebolusyon" from Lav
Diaz's previous film, "Batang West Side," is
dislocation and bereavement of place. If the Pinoy cop
in America is fleeing his twisted past as a torturer
in "West Side," Raynaldo represents the victim, the
other end of the torture process. The boy rescued from
the dumps by a deranged woman represents the
derangement inflicted by the warped reality of the
Philippines. He won't be like Jacob sold to slavery by
his brothers and later exalted in Egypt. When Raynaldo
returns to his original foster family toward the end
of the movie, he comes full circle. We know his lot
has not vastly changed; in fact, his foster sisters
bring aid to the communist underground on the sly,
just like when he was a boy, his foster uncle (Pen
Medina) stole guns from the military and sold them to
the communists. But Raynaldo knows there will be no
surprises. He will not come unhinged like his beloved
Hilda who rescued him from the garbage dump when he
was a baby. He will abide by the reality.

Torment and agony

"Ebolusyon" is a powerful movie. Nominated for best
picture in the 28th Gawad Urian of the Manunuri ng
Pelikulang Pilipino, it is a movie that makes us abide
by the torment and agony that is Philippine history in

the last 30 years. It relives the darkness of martial
law, the dilemmas of the Aquino transition and the
bedlam that constitutes the present. The movie
explains much of the horror, the better for the viewer
to confront it.

Of course, some will say that what connects
"Ebolusyon" to "West Side" is its swollen, distended
limits. While "West Side" is five hours, "Ebolusyon"
lasts 10 hours, approximating roughly the time it took

for Diaz to finish it-more than nine years.

Thus, the most distinctive aspect of "Ebolusyon" is
also the most problematic- its chronological conceit.
How could an important movie that is a veritable
contemporary Philippine epic be so liberal with its
narrative length that it risks losing the audience it
seeks to affect and influence?

The answer is that there's so much liberality and
comprehensiveness in the vision of Lav Diaz, that the
audience can take the calculated risk of sitting
through "Ebolusyon," imbibing its spirit that meanders

through the alleys and byways of Philippine history, a
tortuous path that, to critics of the film, may be
reflected in the movie's rather tortuous length.

But "Ebolusyon" is too significant to be dismissed as
a movie that takes its title too literally. It is an
important contribution to world cinema, signaling both
a refusal to be confined to the two-hour limit of
commercial cinema and an embrace of the artistic
potentials of digital cinema, particularly digital's
capacity to release the artist from the servitude and
conventions of the studio system.

The latter is perhaps the other distinctive aspect of
"Ebolusyon"- the adamant, unabashed adoption of digital
cinema, its limits and possibilities. No wonder, Diaz
could hardly care about time. Digital knows no time;
it just goes on and on. It is a technological stream
of consciousness if there was one. It democratizes
image-recording. And you know what St. Thomas Aquinas
says about democracy: it tends toward anarchy.

It's a technology, too, that creates its audience.
Part of the reason Diaz's work is not your ordinary
two-hour movie is that it is not one: it hasn't been
transferred on celluloid, unlike, for example, Laurice

Guillen's "Santa Santita," which was shot on video but
transferred on film for commercial release.
"Ebolusyon" is therefore not meant to be shown in
theaters. It's meant to be seen in video houses, on a
more intimate setting perhaps, in episodic fashion
probably, like the soap opera that is a funny metaphor
that runs through the movie.

No rush

"Ebolusyon" is clearly not for movie marathoners. It
is a movie that is not to be seen in a rush. Doing so
may make one miss its other conceits. The subplot on
the conspiracy to assassinate the filmmaker Lino
Brocka for agitating the farmers in the land reform
question is one delicious hyperbole. Obviously this is
Lav Diaz's tribute to the power of cinema. Or is he
lamenting that Brocka did not live long enough to
trigger the revolution?

To be sure, some of the film's expansive
peregrinations may reach a dead end, especially the
rather distended episode of Kadyo (Pen Medina) when he
leaves prison: after failing to integrate back to
society, he returns to a life of crime and becomes a
hired killer, but balks at the prospect of killing
Brocka. The conspiracy turns against him, and as he
makes his final bloody crawl to his death, we know he
has been making the final gasp at life all along. He
has been a living dead even without the fatal dagger
wound. There's no need to belabor that.

There's also the historical lapse. After Kadyo informs
us that he received word about the whereabouts of
Raynaldo in 1988, we see him wandering into the
Mendiola massacre, which took place in January 1987.

But never mind. "Ebolusyon" is an artistic rarity. A
film like this only comes once in 10 years.

The 28th Gawad Urian, the critics' prize for
filmmaking excellence will be handed out in colorful
ceremonies on June 4 at the AFP Theater in Quezon
City. Produced by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino
and APT Productions, the awards will be televised on
GMA-7.

Human Freedom: Beyond Literature

HUMAN FREEDOM: BEYOND LITERATURE

Writing” in the panel “Literature and Human Freedom”
of the Philippine Center for International Pen; 25
November 2006, St. Thomas Aquinas Research Center,
University of Sto. Tomas, Manila.)

Our gathering today brings back a memory.

As the historic decade of 1970 was ending, I caught
the tail-end of the polemics about literature and
society that pitted Jose Garcia Villa against S.P.
Lopez. With some understanding of what the writers
were debating, I felt inclined to be on the side of
the S.P. Lopez school of thought, although a couple of
years later, enraged by the fatal shooting of the
University of the Philippines student Pastor Mesina, I
would lead a mob that stormed his office by the
Oblation, cursing him and throwing sticks and stones,
one of which found its mark right on his chest. That
ushered in the so-called Diliman Commune in 1971.

Such was the turmoil swirling during the decade. One
found little time to wade in the angst of aestheticism
and existentialism of the generation that went before.
When I started writing, a line had already been drawn
that separated writers, with one camp laying down, in
caps and bold, a code for writing that conjoined
literature and society. “Committed” was how it was
described.

Committed literature wielded freedom in a sense that
shocked hardcore aestheticians and transformed
existentialists. If one had to write, so the ethics of
committed writers went, one had to be partisan, and
his or her writing ought to serve the people in ways
that addressed not merely, as my prison mate Jose
“Pete” Lacaba once said, “the dandruff on my scalp or
the private aching in my heart.”

If writing were to express human freedom, it must be
able to say what was precisely forbidden by the
power-wielders. Literature must be unhampered by such
restrictions as the Presidential Proclamation 1017 or
any manifestation of the so-called “calibrated
preemptive response.”

In citing these indications of repression, I am
already talking circa 2006. In fact, here we are,
allotting a session in this conference to discuss
“Literature and Human Freedom” --almost four decades
since the connection started charting a life for the
generations of writers whom poet Emmanuel Lacaba
addressed in this wise:

You want to know, companions of my youth,
How much has changed the wild but shy poet
Forever writing last poem after last poem;
You hear he's dark as earth, barefoot,
A turban round his head, a bolo at his side,
His ball pen blown up to a long-barreled gun:
Deeper still the struggling change inside.
Like husks of coconuts he tears away
The billion layers of his selfishness.
Or learns to cage his longing like the bird
Of legend, fire, and a song within his chest.

Becoming an activist sometime in the 1970s, poet Eman
Lacaba immersed himself in the workers' movement in
Manila-Rizal. Martial law found him joining the New
People’s Army in Mindanao, where he was captured and
summarily executed by elements of the government armed
forces on March 18, 1976.

In the 36 years that passed since 1970, writers like
Eman more than defined literature and human freedom,
did more than compose poetry and short stories and
plays in the service of the masa. They lived – and
died -- as they wrote.

Then there is poet Axel Pinpin, who had been
originally included as a panelist in this conference.
When I saw his name in the first program that was sent
to me, I asked, has Axel been released? No, he still
languishes in jail in Camp Vicente Lim in Laguna,
having been abducted by the military in Tagaytay City
last April 8.

Axel Pinpin, together with five farmers, were tortured
and forced to admit being communist guerillas, which
they are not, and so they did not. Collectively called
the Tagaytay 5, they are members of the Kalipunan ng
mga Magbubukid sa Kabite. Even in prison, Axel upholds
human freedom in his poetry:

Ang binubulok dito’y hindi malamig na katawang lupa
kundi mga pangarap at alab na hangad ng paglaya.
Ang inaagnas dito’y hindi buto, buhok at ngipin
kundi mga karanasan ng paglaban ng kauring alipin.

(What is being decomposed here is not the cold body
but the dream and the passion to be free.
What are being corroded here are not the bones, the
hair and the teeth
but the experiences of struggle of my co-slaves.

Axel Pinpin went beyond writing. Had he not meddled in
peasant organizing, would he have still reaped the ire
of the military? I think so, sooner or later. Because
he combined social writing with social practice -- a
potet fusion sustaining human freedom, the state had
to find a convenient way to pin him down.

In the case of Eman, well, he, too, did not remain
satisfied with waxing poetic about human freedom:

Now of consequence is his anemia
From lack of sleep: no longer for Bohemia,
The lumpen culturati, but for the people, yes.
He mixes metaphors but values more
A holographic and geometric memory
For mountains: not because they are there
But because the masses are there where
Routes are jigsaw puzzles he must piece together.
Though he has been called a brown Rimbaud,
He is not a bandit but a people's warrior.

Eman had to be that people’s warrior.

Fully committing their writing to society, Eman
Lacaba, Axel Pinpin and the rest of their tribe
wielded human freedom by exercising it. In the realm
of the imagination, however, the creative thought,
although liberating, remained just an idea, unable to
change society. Perhaps they realized that it could
only do so, when, grasped by the people, the people
turn it into a material force.

I have absolutely no doubt that they did.

The Marilou Diaz-Abaya Film and Arts Center

MGA KAPATID, PINSAN, CLASSMATES AT MGAKAPATID SA INDUSTRIYA:

"Jose Rizal" and "Muro Ami". Among the several award-winning films directed by Ms. Marilou Diaz-Abaya, these two films made the greatest impact in me because of the excellent directing which make these as classical cinematic masterpieces. I must admit, I am an avid Marilou Diaz-Abaya fan.

Perhaps, unknown to many is the fact that award-winning director Marilou Diaz-Abaya is considered by new talents as their MENTOR. Yes, mentor as in guro, teacher, adviser, coach.

This is so because Ms. Abaya – the award-winning director is now running her own Marilou Diaz-Abaya Film and Arts Center! She is unselfishly sharing and imparting her God-given talents and skills in film-making to neophyte would-be film-makers.

One of my cherished dreams is to have the chance to work with Director Marilou Diaz-Abaya. However, this dream seems to be too elusive for me. Instead of realizing such avowed ambition, last week, I had the chance to work with a group of young talents who had the opportunity to study film-making under Ms. Abaya. Their names are: Teresa Rivera, Mico Michelena, Vitte Rave and Des Crisologo.

You see, Tess (Teresa Rivera) was our director for a short film titled "Valentia" which is their thesis work for La Salle. It is a story of a daughter who rebelled against her parents because she felt she is always being compared with her older sister who is well-behaved. The rebellious daughter is played by Lesley Anne Leveriza who is herself a communication arts graduate from Ateneo. She now runs an acting workshop center for kids in Merville. I play the role of her Dad while commercial model Cherry Malvar plays my wife.

Aside from going through a four-year communication arts course in La Salle, Tess went out of her way and opted to take up film-making/ directing course in the Marilou Diaz-Abaya Film and Arts Center! While Tess was telling me about this, I told myself this young talent is very passionate with her art! Other students could have just been satisfied with the training that they could learn from the regular academic subjects in film-making as part of their communication arts course. Tess craved to learn more. To complement her academic and theoretical knowledge from her four-year communication arts course she enrolled at the Marilou Diaz-Abaya Film and Arts Center. I could simply guess that her intention is to balance the theories from the formal course with the practical aspects of the craft from director Abaya.

I may not have yet realized my dream of being able work with Director Abaya, ( I am still hoping someday I could) but at least I had partly achieved it by being able to have worked with her students. The experience that I went through having worked with Tess (as the Director), Mico (as the Director of Photography) with the expert assistance from Vitte and Des in adjusting the lights and the camera was to say the least – a learning process in itself! Yes, I learned a lot of new ideas in film-making from these new talents who consider Director Abaya as their mentor!

Having said that, I would like to borrow the over-used cliché "the proof of the pudding is in the eating"! The relaxed atmosphere in the set, the preparatory works before the shoot, and the smooth execution of the actual shoot that these students of Director Abaya have made are partial proof that they learned a lot from their guru! Let us wait as they go through the editing and other post-production works until they would finally come out with their final output! I want to watch the premier showing of "Valentia"!

Indie Filmmakers' Cooperative First Ever Workshop Series

The IFC and GRUPONG SINEHAN will hold the SINEhan INDIE SUMMER WORKSHOPS aimed for those students and professionals, specially teachers, who want to learn about guerrilla and indie movie production but don't have enough funds to enroll in other workshop classes.

CRIS PABLO SPONSORS THE FREE INDIE MOVIE PRODUCTION WORKSHOP where he will provide equipment for production and post and will invite some of the groundbreaking indie filmmakers to share their experiences to the scholars.

IFC members who are filmmakers and producers as well as writers and dop's will join in the discussions on digital movie making.

it is also an apprenticeship training because the final project will have the participants train in producing an actual full length indie movie produced by grupong sinehan.

the video shorts by the students plus the full length movie will be shown in commercial cinema venues.

the registration fee for the workshops is only P1,700.00

THE FEE for the INDIE MOVIE ACTING WORKSHOP is P6,000.00. This is the only workshop where there is one on one coaching by an indie director and you will be acting in front of the camera every session.

Gantimpala Theater Foundation's Summer Musical Theater Workshop

"TWO YOUNG GENTLEMEN FROM GANTIMPALA THEATER FOUNDATION"

Aside from educating its youth market, exposing them to various
theater forms, historical novels and literary works of National
Artists that are made into stage plays, Gantimpala Theater prides as
a company that discovers and nurtures promising talents through its
summer workshop program.

Continuing with this tradition of discoveries are Joel Molina and
Perry Escaño. These gentlemen might be considered as relative
unknowns to most lifestyle and entertainment editors, and the public
may not even care who they are what they do but for Gantimpala
Theater, the duo inches their way, slowly but surely to mainstream
entertainment.

Joel Molina (2004 workshop graduate) regular appears on television
thanks to the many commercials wherein he plays lead. Presently, he
is the field reporter for a food-seasoning product with the catchy
line, "ikaw, naka-meaty ka na rin ba?" Other prominent roles are
the suitor seen running away from the father of his beloved that he
did for a very popular flip-flop and he essayed the part of an urban
professional on the verge of sneezing for a vitamin C brand.

Fans and supporters of the latest Sam Milby, Zanjoe Marudo and Toni
Gonzaga starrer, You Got Me, also saw him as part of Gonzaga's SWAT
Team.

Perry Escaño (graduate of workshop class 2003), meanwhile, is busy
filming independent full length and short films. His biggest role
to date is that of Big Boy Gallardo in the Will Fredo phenomenal
maiden offering Compound. As Big Boy, Escaño provided the requisite
heat in the movie as the husband of Romina (Liza Diño) and the boy
toy of Jay (Jake Macapagal).

On primetime TV, he was the hired tormentor of Mark Herras in I Love
NY s and now, he plays as one of the corrupt cops headed by Antonio
Aquitania in Super Twins.

As member of Gantimpala Theater's Actors Company, the two were in
the Four Classics, Molina as Padre Salvi in Kanser (Noli Me Tangere)
and Escaño was Kabesang Tales in El Filibusterismo.

Escaño and Molina are proofs that the discipline and professionalism
that one gets from theater are advantageous to someone planning to
embark on a career in entertainment or the dramatic arts.

For those who wants to follow the footsteps of Joel and Perry,
Gantimpala Theater invites young men and women, ages 13 years-old
and above to its annual summer musical theater workshop which starts
on April 11 to May 19, Monday-Wednesday and Friday, 1pm to 5pm.

Enrollment and registration is currently on going at the Gantimpala
Theater Office, 2/F Open Air Auditorium Building, also in the
Luneta. Tuition fee is P5, 000 (inclusive of recital fee).

A Talk on Preserving Digital Art @ Lopez Memorial Museum

A TALK ON PRESERVING DIGITAL ART

The Lopez Memorial Museum and FirstGen Corporation invites you to a talk on preserving digital arts. What is digital art, what file formats are suitable for archiving, what are the media/modes for archiving and how does one index and retrieve digital art are some of the questions to be discussed by Dr Jose Lloyd Espiritu on March 24, Saturday, 2-4 pm.

Dr Espiritu is an associate professor at the College of Computer Studies at De La Salle University Manila. A former dean of the said college, Dr Espiritu was involved in projects with the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT), the Development Academy of the Philippines and the Department of Education as well as the VLIR-Flemish Interuniversity Council in Belgium.

The talk complements the exhibition Fuzzy Logic: Art and Technology which is ongoing until May 5, 2007. The exhibition is the Lopez Memorial Museums contribution to Zero In 5, a collaborative project among Ateneo Art Gallery, Ayala Museum, Bahay Tsinoy, Lopez Memorial Museum and Museo Pambata. Zero In 5 marks the 5th year that this museum consortium has pooled its efforts to share and expand museum-going audiences and more pointedly focus on bridging formal and museum education modes.
