Approach to Reality : Neo-Realism
by 5th Sinelab Experimental Workshop Series Jan-Feb 2007
In the late forties, fifties and sixties, a new form of cinema was emerging in Asia and Europe. New cinema characterized by personal, non-generic and related directly to the contemporary historical situation. One of the movements created under this new cinema was the Neorealist movement.
Neorealists works for a cinema that is closely connected with the experience of living. And so, a neorealist writer approaches reality with emphasis on the subject as opposed to her or his view of the subject. He or she attacks reality in terms of psychological, ethical and political effects. Thus, the written material has significance not for what it is but for what it does.
In this regard, immersion and intelligent observation are essential qualities under this movement. One must be familiar with the subject and its unique point of view about the world. Subject may take the form of a character, a situation, an event, space or a moment in time.
For example, if the subject is a prostitute as a character, the prostitutes point of view of the world is emphasize. The writer, therefore, becomes the observer and presents his or her observation through the written material. One can say that the writer is using a documentary material and deploying it as a narrative.
The prostitutes point of view of the world as she experiences living always serves a purpose in enacting political, ethical or psychological effects. The audience of the material is then given freedom to interpret the material relative to their point of view.
Personal interest and experience are important ingredients in developing a writer's approach to reality. For instance, the lack of philosophy, ideology or experience may lead to a concept that is highly problematic as it tries to form its reality.
Approach to reality is vital when a writer is constructing the concept of a material. Not having a firm grasp in terms of one's approach to reality tends to be a huge disability in translating an abstract vision into a concrete mission of the material. As a result, premise construction tends to suffer and the material is left in the realm of the metaphysical
