The Festival runs an international and a national competition since
1991. It will present films that are ousted from traditional
distribution venues and can rarely be seen in movie theatres.
The organizers aim to continue that European-rate, international film
competition which has been the backbone of their Festival. In 2005,
the international competition programme was made out of 1500 films of
60 countries. These films have be produced in the last few years.
The organizers prefer films that are excluded from the traditional
structure of distribution, thus they are rarely shown in cinemas and
television, and they especially welcome art-works with themes
appropriate to the profiles of the festival:
Documentary films: with the emphasis on the image and film
realisation, instead of verbalism,
Musical films: associated with jazz, contemporary or archaic folk
music, also musical films creatively using or dealing with ethnic-
based contemporary or improvised music,
Dance and movement films: inspired by the subjects of dance and
movements (with the exception of documentation of these),
Animation films: based on different animation techniques, especially
those expanding the limits of animation,
Erotic films: with artistic contents,
Films adapting and comparing East and West European visual and
cultural values.
MEDIAWAVE is an active member of the European Coordination of Film
Festivals since 1999.
